Are We in Control of Our Lives as We Claim?

Do we have control over this elusive gift called life?

When Decision of Life is made in the Middle of the Road

You may wonder when people sometimes say things like, “I must enjoy my life the way I want it. Or nobody should tell me what I should do with my life.” A seemingly individual desire?

Again, like torrential rain, you’ll come across the monotonous and sometimes boring jingle: “my life, my life, over and over.”

However, if you listen to the words of many reasonable people who know what life all is about, they might all ask: “Do our lives belong to us as we childishly claim?” What’s your opinion?

The Dichotomy of Opinions Regarding Our Life Claim.

The question of whether our lives belong to us is a complex one and can be approached from many different angles.

Some people believe that our lives are our own to do with as we please, while others believe that our lives have a higher purpose or meaning beyond our individual desires.

The Philosophical Aspects of Our Lives.

Agree, it’s a complex and personal topic that can vary from person to person.

The question of whether our lives have a transcendent purpose beyond our individual desires is a philosophical one that has been debated by scholars for centuries.

Some people believe that there is a higher purpose to life, while others believe that our purpose is determined by our individual desires and goals. Ultimately, the answer to this question is a matter of personal belief and perspective.

Some argue that objective reality is an illusion and that we re-construct the world around ourselves. This means that our perception of reality is subjective and can vary from person to person.

In this context, some might say that our lives belong to us in the sense that we have the power to shape our own reality. What do you say to this?

The Religious or Spiritual Point of View.

From a religious or spiritual perspective, some people believe that our lives do not belong to us but rather to a higher power or divine force. In this view, our lives have a divine purpose beyond our individual desires. Is this a sense of purpose or a philosophical bent?

Take for instance, in the course of writing this article, our pastor who led the Sunday worship service passed away a few days ago. However, he passed away hours after the service.

Sadly, he died from a heart attack. All of us who watched him at the pulpit, maybe himself didn’t know that he was preaching his last message. This illustrates that we are not in complete control of our lives. We are therefore influenced by divine purposes beyond our own desires.

Miscellaneous Reasons Why We May Not Lay Claim to Our Lives.

Here are some reasons why some people might have to believe that the life we have does not belong to us:

  • We don’t control the circumstances of our birth.
  • We don’t have any control over where, when, or to whom we are born.
  • Our family, culture, and socioeconomic status are determined before we are even born. Therefore, our life’s foundation is already set before we have any say in the matter and we just have to work toward it.
  • We don’t control external factors that shape our lives: Even after we are born, we are subject to a wide range of external factors that we have little or no control over. These can include things like natural disasters, political upheavals, economic downturns, and other events that can significantly impact our lives.
  • We are subject to the expectations of others: Throughout our lives, we are subject to the expectations and demands of other people. Our parents, teachers, employers, and society at large all have expectations of us that we may feel compelled to fulfill, even if they don’t align with our own desires or values.

Ultimately, our lives are limited in time, and we don’t have any control over when they will end. We may think like our time on earth is too short to accomplish everything we want, or we may feel like we are wasting our lives on things that don’t matter.

Overall, the idea that our lives don’t belong to us can be a reminder of the ways in which we are interconnected with the world around us, and of the importance of finding meaning and purpose in the time we have. You’re welcome to share your thoughts.
